About Philippe Lincy

Dunumba is a West-African word for the 40-gallon drums still used today to send messages in some parts of Mali and Guinea.

In Philippe Lincy's teambuilding workshop, you will learn to play each of the percussion instruments in African music, while creating beautiful rhythms that intersect with and complement each other.

Every rythym in African music has a specific purpose, and for each song, Philippe will discuss its unique role in African society, from fishing, farming and even wrestling.
Like a heartbeat, drumming connects with something very primordial in human nature. And while true mastery of drumming take many years, this connection makes it possible for anyone to enjoy when led by a skilled musician.

History
Dunumba: A 40-gallon drum used to send messages in West Africa.

Doudoumba, led by Philippe Lincy, has existed since 1988, but his own history, like that of West Africa, goes back much further.
Born in the West Indies, Philippe began learning percussion at the age of 9. His career as teacher and performer began in earnest in 1974, accompanying the Grand Ballet de l'Afrique Noire, which performed at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. He went on to tour around the world with the company for several years.

Since then, he has had a prolific and varied musical career, having spent much of it working and living in West Africa. In Australia, he has performed with Marcia Hines, Jenny Morris, James Morrison, in Cirque du Soleil, and The Lion King, and with Salif Keita at the Womadelaide festival. His other Australian festival credits include the Sydney Festival, Sydney 2000, Expo 88 with Kalabash and The Manly Jazz Festival, among others.

Philippe loves to share his passion for music and its benefits with others. For 4 years, Philippe performed in the "Unleash the Power Within" fire-walking workshops of Anthony Robbins. Philippe has been leading drumming circles and teaching since 1985.
